अभ्यास वा दुरभ्यासा - Normal Habit and Abnormal Habit
Abhyasa Va Durabhyasa
All creations of nature are prone to habit-forming and we humans are no exception. We form good habits intentionally and willfully. We acquire or form bad habits unintentionally and unwillingly and sometimes forcefully. Repeated pattern of behaviors form into a habits that can be either good or bad.
अभ्यास (Abhyasa) is a Sanskrit word meaning practice or normal habit that aims at achieving a tranquil state of mind. It is a routine thing what we do usually at a particular time every day in 24-hour time period, like eating at particular time, sleeping at particular time, working at particular time etc. The Abhyasa are considered good or bad depending on whether that practice enhances your quality of life or deteriorates your quality of life.
Similarly दुरभ्यासा (Durabhyasa) is again a Sanskrit origin word which means abnormal practice or abnormal habits which is not conducive to your life. Durabhyasa does not enhances your quality of life but in fact deteriorates your quality of life to a large extent.
We have an inherent quality which makes us habit forming out of anything and everything. We have a tendency to form habits, it is good in a sense that, it becomes a part of our subconscious mind, we often follow a routine subconsciously and effortlessly. Usually habits are a sort of subconscious activity we often do routinely, which sometimes is an element of surprise even to ourselves. As long as our habits, which we have formed over a time period, are enhancing our quality of life and maintaining it at a reasonably better standards is a good and the going also gets good because of those habits. Our habits allows us to concentrate on other new and challenging aspects in our day-to-day life consciously thereby making the journey of life easy as well as interesting and making us await for every new day in our life to unfold with newer and interesting things in life thereby improving quality of our life significantly.
We do not need to cultivate bad habits. They are in fact acquired and become part of us without our knowledge or intention and making us realize about it only when it starts disturbing our daily routine and our quality of life deteriorate because of them. We realize about our bad habits only after it has taken a firm ground within us and starts disturbing and intruding into our already established good habits and then we start taking notice of it only when our quality of life deteriorates over a period of time.
We always need to be vigilant consciously about our habits and trying to make out or differentiate between good and bad aspects in our habits and eliminate and eradicate the bad habits which we had acquired by not allowing it to take firm ground in our being and establish itself permanently within us. This process we need to do throughout our lifetime as long as we are alive on this earth because any sort of laxity in it will lead to situation going out of our hands and we will fall prey to negative elements in life thereby destroying our life completely. Prevention is better than cure because most of the things can be prevented as most of them does not have a cure.
It is only through abhyasa we can build and mold our true character in this life. Character of every individual reflects their ability and capacity they possess within themselves making them and turning them into a wise being.
